So, much like everyone else, every year I make a bunch of new years resolutions that typically don't last until February, lol. And they are always the same: lose weight, get good grades, travel more, save money, etc etc etc.
I start out every year full of motivation on January 2nd. Hitting the gym everyday, eating salads and drinking Slim Fasts, throwing money in the bank, planning trips. Ohh yeah, every year I think "this is the year i'm going to actually do it. this is my year"
Well...it's never my year. lol i never do those things. So this year, instead of doing the same thing, i decided to figure out why i fail at those things. and once i know why i can't keep my resolutions, i'll work on fixing those things, and i figure all my old resolutions will work themselves out.
And then, a plan was born. a plan i like to call Be More Awesome: 2011
Be More Awesome: 2011 consists of 5 Pillars of Awesomeness. They are: Financial, Physical, Mental/Spiritual, Organizational and General Awesomeness.
I came up with these pillars at work the other night. I took a notebook with me to work when i worked third shift, and i opened it, and i just started writing. and i wrote and i wrote and i wrote. about anything and everything i've had problems with. some big problems, some small problems, new problems, old problems, problems that are feasible i can correct, ones that aren't realistic to try to fix now. And when i was done writing, i had filled 7 pages, front and back. WOW. that's a lot of problems, lol.
Then i went through and identified the main ways that i get in my own way. then, the five pillars of awesomeness were born.
My actual plan is quite long, so i'll spare everyone the boring details (isn't this already boring? lol thought so. i'll spare more boringness) but i'll give a quick run down of the five pillars. basically what i did was made easy little fixes for each pillar. and once those things are done, the big problem will become much more manageable. i also tried to be realistic for my personality, limitations and lifestyle.
Pillar 1: Financial
I need to open several savings accounts to save money for different things. (i've actually already done this, lol) i need separate savings accounts for long term savings, short term savings (for buying expensive items), vacations, and bills. Then i need a checking account that is at a different bank, so it's more difficult for me to access my savings on a daily basis (i've done this too) Now i need to take my direct deposit forms to my work so i can have money that needs to be saved put right in my accounts and money that is for spending put right in my checking account. Idk if this will work, but i haven't tried it yet, so i have a good feeling about it so far! =)
Also under financial is NO fast food (this appears later as well.) i prolly spend more money on food than on anything else. i'm limiting restaurant and bar outings and grocery shopping more. but i want to stay completely away from fast food restaurants. we'll see how that goes. lol but it's important because even though it seems cheap, it's costing me a ton of money. and it made me fat. and i'm sick of being fat. which brings me to the next pillar...
Pillar 2: Physical
This one is long so i'll just touch on the most important aspect of it. I'm going to wake up every morning early. Like 8ish (obviously on nights i work third shift, i will just be staying up til 8am lol) no matter what. get up at 8am and open my window, get some fresh air, take my ritalin, and get my ass out of bed. even if i just go to the couch and watch tv. Step one: get out of bed. the ideal next step is go to the gym or do yoga. hopefully once i'm up i'll be energized to do such things. for me, physically getting out of bed is the hard part. Here's a list of the rest of the physical pillar: *Get between 6-8 hours of sleep*NO fast food*make and keep all doctors appointments*drink water*use lunchbox to take food with me when i'm out*train for some sort of race*lift weights. But all that depends on getting out of bed. So...my goal is to just get out of bed early every morning =)
Pillar 3: Mental/Spiritual
This one is easy because I spent all of 2010 working on this. So most of these have become habits. I'll just list them off: *MEDITATE everyday*go back to counseling*write in a journal everyday*blog at least once a week (check! lol)*read up on Buddhism more*Practice getting good karma*Keep working on getting rid of irrational negative thoughts*READ*Go to library/bookstore once a week.
Pillar 4: Organizational
Ohhh organization. My nemesis. I remember being in the 5th grade and my teacher told me my desk was an "organized mess" well....over time, i became less organized and more messy. Organization is not easy for me. i've tried everything over the years. So i have to be careful with this one, because most things i will say are setting me up for failure, lol. So they're really easy. baby steps...baby steps. Here goes! *Get bookshelf* Write in planner each day* LOOK at planner every morning* Get a chair for my desk* Sit in desk once a day* Get file cabinet* Maybe use file cabinet (baby steps...)* Get plastic bins for stuff* Put stuff in bins* Respond to emails everday* Make a music playlist to listen to when running errands* Actually run errands* Keep a notebook in my purse where i write down my to do list* Get a big calendar* write on it* Clean car...maybe. Clean room...probably.
Whew...i'm exhausted just looking at that list. That brings us to...
Pillar 5: General Awesomeness
These are things that i will work on when i have time, just to make me a little more awesome. Some of them could fit under other pillars of awesomeness, but they aren't crucial, so i separated them.
*Review French* Read LOTS* Start going to musicals/orchestra performances again* Write a book* Learn to do basic maintenance things on my car* Say yes more than no (when appropriate)* Cook a meal like once a week* Write letters to people i don't see often* Once a month rent a free educational video from family video about something random*
Well, there it is. Be More Awesome: 2011 is already in effect! So..we'll see. We shall see. I figure that this is better than saying "lose weight." that sounds like such a huge task. but "get out of bed" is much easier. lol and once i'm up...awesomeness will happen.
Wish me luck!!! =)
